Hiking the Plateau

This weekend we had the most wonderful hike to the top of and across the Plateau Mountain (Platåfjellet) - my first proper walk around here. The weather was pretty amazing - bright sun and almost no wind.

We started near the church and stopped first by the landmark Longyearvarden, with excellent view over the town.

On the way up to it we passed this, not exactly a mine, but an acceptable substitute for a certain young man who´s dying to visit one.

Also passing - fat, docile reindeer with skin dangling off its antlers.

More view: Longyearbyen church.

Our house, pink arrow pointing.

Advent-valley.

On the plateau, there was plenty of lovely soft snow, which Thomas made the most of.

Looking north, gigantic golf-balls in the distance. Or in fact, SvalSat, a satellite station.

William was away, but Åse Kristine was our excellent guide, and in charge of security (she carried her very own Mauser).

...as focus on security is a must. This landmark is a sad reminder of the danger. On this spot a woman was killed by a young polar bear 12 years ago.

Easter in September.

Looking south.

And going down again. Through the valley of gravel and rocks.

A truly wonderful hike. I´m glad I got to experience it, as there might be a lot more snow any time, and in June it will be far to muddy to enjoy long hikes, or so they tell me.

It´s rapidly growing darker at night, now. This photo was taken the same evening from our kitchen window. It looks like I have manipulated the colours, but I swear I have not!

Hilsen Elisa.
